Former Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Hon. Sidie Mohamed Tunis, has highlighted the importance of strengthening democratic institutions, promoting credible elections, and encouraging inclusive dialogue, following his parliamentary diplomacy mission to The Gambia.
Reflecting on his engagement in the country, Speaker Tunis described The Gambia as a reminder that democracy is not a destination, but a continuous process that requires commitment, vigilance, and collective responsibility from leaders, institutions, and citizens.
“The Gambia is one of those places that reminds me why democracy is never a finished project,” Speaker Tunis stated, noting that credible elections are built long before polling day through trust in institutions, respect for the rule of law, and a shared commitment to placing national interests above political differences.
He emphasised that democratic stability cannot be measured solely by the holding of elections, but also by the strength of governance institutions, the willingness of political actors to embrace dialogue, and the ability of citizens and leaders to uphold democratic principles.
Speaker Tunis’ reflection comes at a time when several countries across West Africa continue to face complex challenges surrounding constitutional governance, political transitions, and democratic consolidation.
According to the former ECOWAS Speaker, the future of West Africa will depend on the region’s ability to build resilient institutions, encourage constructive engagement among stakeholders, and safeguard the democratic values that promote peace and development.
He further reaffirmed the importance of regional cooperation through platforms such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), stressing that democracy, good governance, and stability remain essential pillars for advancing the collective aspirations of West African nations.
Speaker Tunis concluded that protecting democracy requires continuous effort, mutual respect, and a shared commitment by all stakeholders to preserve the values that unite the West African community.
