In recognition of his outstanding contribution to public health and community development, Joseph Sellu Vanday, one of Sierra Leone’s most dedicated public health volunteers and innovators, has been honoured with a Meritorious Award by the All Works of Life (AWOL) National Executive.
The prestigious ceremony, held last week in Freetown, brought together distinguished Sierra Leoneans from various walks of life to celebrate excellence, patriotism, and service to humanity. The event served as a reminder of the vital role individuals play in shaping a better Sierra Leone through innovation, compassion, and leadership.

During his keynote address, Sahid Ahmed Nasrallah, popularly known as D Monk, who serves as both the President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) and National Chairman of AWOL, underscored the purpose and integrity of the award scheme.
He explained that the AWOL Meritorious Award is reserved for individuals whose meaningful contributions to society, communities, and nation-building have created a lasting impact on the lives of others.
“Since AWOL was established, we have remained committed to ensuring that our award recipients are carefully selected through a rigorous process of vetting, scrutiny, and investigation,” said Nasrallah. “We do not just wake up and bestow awards on anyone. Our awards are unique and different because they go only to those who truly deserve them. We are, therefore, proud to present the Health Innovation Award 2023 to Mr. Joseph Sellu Vanday.”
Mr. Vanday’s recognition came as a result of his remarkable efforts in promoting public health innovation, volunteerism, and community engagement across Sierra Leone. Through his initiatives, he has helped improve healthcare delivery, empower young people in health-related projects, and foster sustainable solutions to pressing community health challenges.
In receiving the award, Mr. Vanday expressed his deep appreciation to AWOL for the recognition and reaffirmed his commitment to continue serving his country through innovative health projects and volunteerism.
“This award is not just for me, but for every health worker, volunteer, and community member who continues to make sacrifices for a healthier Sierra Leone,” he said. “It motivates me to keep pushing boundaries and to use innovation as a tool to improve lives.”
The AWOL Meritorious Awards have, over the years, become one of Sierra Leone’s most respected platforms for recognizing individuals and institutions that embody excellence, dedication, and the true spirit of nation-building.
As the 2023 Health Innovation Award recipient, Joseph Sellu Vanday joins a distinguished list of Sierra Leoneans whose tireless work continues to inspire hope and transformation across the nation.
