The case of KK Beverage Situation speaks volume
By Alhaji Turay
Sierra Leone needs investors who will come and open companies that will help government push the economy forward. With over 60 percent of our population being youth, government and citizens must support businesses that create jobs.

Because of this, we must be careful not to maltreat investors who are helping to create jobs for our people and boost the economy.
KK BEVERAGE SPEAKS OUT
KK Beverage Company Limited, located at Waterloo-Masiaka Highway, Kwama Village, Six Mile, in the Western Rural District, is one such company. In just five to six months of operation, it has employed over 150 Sierra Leonean citizens.
However, the company says it has been facing media intimidation and false allegations.
For weeks, reports circulated alleging that an unruly Chinese employee assaulted a Sierra Leonean worker, Mr. Algassimu Barrie, leaving him hospitalized. The reports further claimed that journalists and officials from the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone were denied access to the facility, and that the company was hiding something.
On Friday, July 10th, 2026, management of KK Beverage finally engaged this medium and explained what actually happened.
“IT WAS A THEFT CASE, NOT BRUTALITY”
According to the company heads, they claimed that the issue was misrepresented as the fact was distorted. In an interview with this writer, both Mr. Elvis and Mr. Bill, through their interpreter Mr. Freeman, expressed dissatisfaction on the way the matter was reported with unfairness. They told me how they received numerous reports which are full of factual errors. In their own words, both Elvis and Bill have this to say through their interpreter….
“We have received numerous reports containing false information alleging that Chinese nationals attacked locals, resulting in a worker being hospitalized with serious injuries,” management stated. “Initially, we chose to ignore these rumors and let the facts speak for themselves. But the persistent reports have compelled us to take a stand.”
Management explained that the issue began with theft at the warehouse. According to them, the company had lost over 12,000 bottles of beverages to theft.
“Serious theft was rampant in the warehouse,” they said. “By the time Mr. Algassimu Barrie was caught, the company had already suffered significant losses. That is why a Chinese staff member kicked the individual. That staff member has since been deported.”
The company further stated that Mr. Barrie was never hospitalized. “After the incident, we saw him walking around in good health. Within a short period, he visited numerous agencies to file complaints against KK Beverage Company. He recovered on his own very quickly.”
COMPENSATION AND POLICE STATEMENT
KK Beverage says compensation was paid. “The claim that we failed to provide compensation is false. We have already paid substantial compensation in the presence of the CID. We also gave a full statement at the CID. The facts are clear.”
The company said it did not hand Mr. Barrie over to police because “we did not wish to leave a permanent stain on his record.”
THE PICTURES: REALITY VS FABRICATION
A major part of the controversy centered on an image that circulated online.
KK Beverage Management raised concerns about a picture published by Sierraloaded. “They used software to design an image depicting a fake factory bearing KK’s name and address. In front of the factory, a fake Asian person is shown attacking a Black person. This image is not from our facility at Six Mile,” management stated.
Management also clarified details about staff uniforms to further prove the image is false. “All our workers wear a blue and black t-shirt as uniform. We do not use overalls or jeans as uniform. The only exception is staff we have recently employed — their t-shirts are currently being processed.”
To set the record straight, KK Beverage has provided the actual pictures of its facility.

ON DENIAL OF ACCESS
On allegations that media and Human Rights Commission Sierra Leone staff were denied access, management said the facility remains open to lawful investigation. They also questioned the dates in previous reports, noting inconsistencies between June 24 and July 6, 2026.
CALL FOR FAIR REPORTING
“We are calling upon fair-minded media to help us counter these claims,” management said. “We are also pursuing legal action to hold accountable outlets that have engaged in defamation.”
Mr. Elvis Liu, who was personally involved and visited the Labor Bureau, Ministry of Public Security, and CID, said: “What was essentially a case of theft was blown out of proportion simply because a Chinese company was involved. Sierra Leone is a nation that values justice. Its people, like the Chinese people, love peace and aspire to a better life, and we should treat one another well.”
WORKERS SPEAK
During the visit, some workers expressed appreciation to the company. “If not for this company, some of us would find it very difficult to feed our families and take care of our children in school,” one worker said.
CONCLUSION
KK Beverage is calling on the public and media to verify facts before publication. The company maintains that it is committed to creating jobs and operating within the laws of Sierra Leone.
