Why Enrollment at SLIF Declined

The author of this document is Alhaji Turay, the eldest son of the late Murana Turay, one of the three founding members of the Sierra Leone Islamic Federation (SLIF).

Alhaji Turay, a few months ago, put out a document highlighting a number of issues bothering around the progress of SLIF and corruption. Several issues were mentioned questioning the credibility of the outgoing Board of Management of SLIF. All efforts made to process the document through the outgoing Board Chairperson, Ishaga Murana Turay, junior brother to the author, Alhaji Turay, met with stiff resistance.

Kindly, read the document below and visit the school to ascertain the veracity of the written claims made by a seemingly marginalized and senior member of the proprietor’s nominees. The document is titled: “EVIDENCE BASED INADEQUACIES FOUND AFTER MY BACKGROUND CHECK THAT HAS LED TO THE DOWNFALL OF THE SCHOOL.”

Below, among many others, were issues raised by the only surviving proprietor of SLIF, Alhaji Turay, after the demise of his father, Late Murana Turay:

  1. The Board never met with teachers during his tenure as Board Chairperson.
  2. Since 2012, the Board Chair and the Principal have never established any established project.
  3. “School enrollment drops from 1,420 to less than 250 as of present.”
  4. “The school has no staff room for teachers, no Vice Principal and Bursar.”

Prior to the administration of Saidu Pedro Kamara, the school role was over 1000, but with his retirement, being one of the longest-serving principals, the school role decreased to less than 300. Sierra Leone Islamic Federation (SLIF), is one of the oldest government-assisted senior secondary schools in Kambia district. The school has enjoyed countless amounts of government support over decades, making it a public learning center, rather than privately-owned property.

These, plus many others cataloged by old boys and girls, teachers and other community members, are said to be reason(s) that have caused the backwardness of the Sierra Leone Islamic Federation (SLIF), a school that has been receiving support from the government of Sierra Leone and donors over the years.
