Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL) has issued a stern warning to the public regarding a fraudulent recruitment notice circulating widely on social media. This fake notice falsely claims that Stats SL has launched an online application portal for hiring staff for the upcoming Population and Housing Census.
In an official statement released on July 8, 2025, Stats SL vehemently refuted the notice, labeling it as “false and misleading.” The agency clarified that it has not opened any new recruitment portal whatsoever. Stats SL emphasized that the only legitimate recruitment exercise for temporary cartographic and census secretariat staff occurred between April 27 and May 15, 2025. That application window has since closed, and the recruitment process for those positions is already well underway.
The agency further stressed, “We have not launched any new applications via any portal or by any other means.” Stats SL reminded the public that all official announcements regarding future recruitment will be exclusively made through its official website, www.statistics.sl, and its verified social media accounts on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and Instagram. Reputable radio stations and newspapers will also be used for official communications.
Stats SL urged citizens to be highly vigilant against fraudulent schemes, and reiterated that the agency never requests or accepts any form of payment for employment opportunities. The statement concluded by advising that “any unauthorized links or announcements should be treated as scams designed to defraud the public.” The public is encouraged to remain watchful and report any suspicious recruitment activity to the relevant authorities.
