President Bio Nominates New Auditor-General

On July 3, 2025, the Government of Sierra Leone officially appointed Mr. Abdul Aziz as the new Auditor-General, pending parliamentary approval.

The decision follows consultations with the Public Service Commission, and is in line with Section 119(1) of the 1991 Constitution.

The announcement was issued by Press Secretary, Yusuf Keketoa Sandi Esq., marking a pivotal moment in Sierra Leone’s public accountability landscape.

Mr. Aziz, a veteran with over three decades of service at Audit Service Sierra Leone, previously served as acting Auditor-General during the suspension of his predecessor, Mrs. Lara Taylor-Pearce.

Aziz’s appointment comes in the aftermath of Taylor-Pearce’s controversial dismissal, which sparked debate over the independence of oversight institutions in the country. Her tenure was notable for rigorous and high-profile audits of government ministries and agencies.

As Auditor-General, Abdul Aziz will be responsible for auditing the public accounts of Sierra Leone, including central and local government bodies, statutory corporations, and institutions receiving public funds.

He will be mandated to submit annual reports to Parliament within 12 months of the end of each financial year, and will enjoy full autonomy in the execution of his duties, without interference from external authorities.

The appointment is seen as a critical step in reinforcing transparency and accountability in public finance management.
