Abuja, Nigeria, Wednesday, 1 July 2026 –
His Excellency, President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone and Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States, has arrived in Abuja, Nigeria, ahead of the official commissioning of the new ECOWAS Headquarters, a landmark regional facility popularly known as the “Eye of West Africa.”

President Bio was accompanied by a high-level delegation, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Timothy Musa Kabba, alongside other senior government officials.
As Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority, President Bio is expected to play a leading role at the commissioning ceremony, where he is expected to deliver the keynote address and cut the ribbon of the new headquarters.
The programme will feature remarks by China’s Foreign Minister in recognition of the People’s Republic of China’s support in funding and constructing the complex, as well as addresses by President Bio, Dr. Touray, and President Tinubu.

The state-of-the-art ECOWAS Headquarters will, for the first time, bring together the ECOWAS Commission, the Community Parliament, and the Community Court of Justice under one complex, replacing decades of operations spread across multiple locations in Abuja. The facility includes an 800-seat conference hall, modern interpretation-equipped meeting rooms, archives, a medical clinic, and parking facilities for more than 700 vehicles.
President Bio’s participation underscores Sierra Leone’s active leadership of ECOWAS and reflects the Authority’s continued commitment to strengthening regional integration, institutional reform, peace, security, and economic cooperation across West Africa.
