Sierra Leone’s Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU) has made important strides in combating fraud and narcotics trafficking following a recent investigation in Lungi.
On February 28, 2025, police arrested seven individuals—including nationals from Ivory Coast, Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone—allegedly involved in a fraud scheme promising job placements and overseas travel.
The police leadership, under Inspector General William Fayia Sellu and Chief Superintendent Mohamed K. Allieu, has been lauded for their efforts. Outgoing Local Unit Commander, Chief Superintendent Sahr Nyuma, also received praise for his role in establishing the TOCU, which aims to combat organized crime, human trafficking, and drug trade.
In a recent raid in Masoila, Madina, and Rotifunk junctions, police seized narcotics and apprehended drug dealers. The TOCU was formed to address the rising crime rate in Lungi, a strategic area with numerous sea landing sites facilitating drug trafficking and other criminal activities.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Abdul Nabieu Bangura emphasized the importance of public awareness and community engagement in the fight against crime.
He urged citizens to provide relevant information to help combat drug trade and its devastating effects on youths. “This trade enriches only a few while destroying our future leaders,” he stated.
