Govt Declares Stance Of ‘Zero Tolerance To Drug Trafficking’

The Government of Sierra Leone has issued a formal response following the impounding of an embassy vehicle and arrest of its driver in Guinea on January 13, 2025.

The vehicle, belonging to the Sierra Leonean Embassy in Conakry, was reportedly impounded by Guinean authorities on suspicion that its occupants were in possession of substances believed to be cocaine.

In a statement issued last week, the Government confirmed it has taken immediate action, including recalling Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Guinea, Alimamy Bangura, to Freetown.

“The Ambassador has been summoned to provide a comprehensive account of this incident,” a statement reads. “We are determined to get to the bottom of this matter and will not condone any breach of national or international laws.”

The Government assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to establish the facts and identify any individuals involved. “We are working closely with the Guinean authorities to ensure transparency and accountability,” the statement added.

Officials emphasized that any individual (s) found guilty of engaging in drug trafficking or violating legal statutes will face severe consequences.

“Let it be clear: Sierra Leone upholds a zero-tolerance policy on drug trafficking,” the government noted.

The Government pledged to keep the public informed as the investigation progresses, urging patience and support for the ongoing efforts to uphold justice and accountability.
