Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health and Sanitation has announced a concerning rise in Mpox cases, with 13 new infections, bringing the national total to 4,098. The highly contagious virus continues its aggressive spread, particularly in the densely populated Western Urban area of Freetown, which now accounts for a staggering 2,393 cases.

The Ministry’s latest update indicates that there are currently 705 active Mpox cases across the country. Encouragingly, 78 new recoveries were recorded in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of individuals who have recuperated from the illness to 3,368. The death toll from Mpox in Sierra Leone remains at 25.

Beyond the Western Urban area, Mpox cases have been reported in various other regions, with Western Rural reporting the second-highest number of infections at 821. The gender distribution of confirmed cases shows a slight preponderance among males, with 2,148 male cases compared to 1,950 female cases.

The Ministry reiterated the critical distinction between Mpox and chickenpox, emphasizing that they are separate viral infections. The public is strongly urged to remain vigilant and to immediately contact the emergency number 117 for medical attention or assistance if they develop a fever accompanied by unexplained rashes. This proactive measure is crucial for early diagnosis, containment, and effective management of the disease, safeguarding both individual health and public well-being.
