Gento Kamara Maintains Accepting Defeat
The Mayoral Candidate of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) in the June 24th, 2023 election, Mohamed Gento Kamara, has said that he won the election but accepted the result announced by the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) for the sake of peace.
“I won the election, but the ECSL, which knows best and has the mandate, announced the result in favour of Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr. In the interest of peace, I accepted”.
“I called to congratulate Madam Aki-Sawyerr and promised to work with her any time she needed me”.
Kamara made this statement in a recent interview on one of Sierra Leone’s biggest radio stations, Radio Democracy. Kamara stated that he went into the election following the August 10th, 2022, violent protest, as he wanted to create and ensure a peaceful atmosphere in Freetown.
He furthered that he feels fulfilled by the fact that every Sierra Leonean is entitled, irrespective of their tribe and region, to contest for the Mayoral position of Freetown, as people used to think it’s only entitled to the Creoles.
He disclosed that Freetown went silent when the Mayoral results were announced in favor of Aki-Sawyerr, which manifested the truth that he was favored by the votes.
He also debunked claims of him abandoning all road projects started before the elections, stating that road construction is normally undertaken in the dries and not in the rainy season.
“I am fully prepared to continue and complete all road projects awarded to me by the government and they are in full support of my projects”.
He ended by disclosing his resignation from politics to concentrate on his private sector work and his usual assistance to communities.
