Amid Rising Party Tensions…

APC MPs Embark On Reconciliation Drive

The leadership of the All People’s Congress (APC) in Parliament recently held a crucial discussion with Dr. Samura Kamara, the party’s Presidential Candidate for the 2023 General Elections. The meeting, led by Hon. Abdul Kargbo, marks an important step towards addressing internal conflicts within the party.

Hon. Kargbo, who led the parliamentary delegation, took to Twitter to share the outcomes of the meeting. He emphasized that all participants agreed on the critical need for unity within the APC. According to him, they are committed to ensuring that the party presents a unified front and will be engaging with other stakeholders in the near future to solidify this stance.

The urgency of these efforts is underscored by a letter dated 2nd August 2024, penned by Hon. Amb. Alimamy Philip Koroma, Chairman of the APC Elders Council. Addressed to the party leadership, the letter raises alarm over the escalating tensions between the APC Executive and Dr. Samura Kamara. Koroma expressed deep concern over what he described as an “unhealthy relationship” between the current leadership and the Presidential Candidate. He noted that this rift has led to damaging public exchanges, both within the party and across social media platforms.

Koroma’s letter highlighted that the discord began to surface towards the end of the Tripartite Committee’s work in June. This committee was initially formed to foster cooperation among party members during the 2023 elections, and played a key role in negotiating the Agreement for National Unity with the government. However, despite these initial successes, unity within the APC has since deteriorated, leading to growing frustration among party members and supporters alike.

The internal conflict is not just a matter of concern for party insiders, but has also attracted the attention of the public and international observers. The situation has raised questions about the APC’s ability to maintain a strong and coherent opposition, which is vital for the country’s democratic process.

Moving forward, the APC leadership’s engagement with Dr. Samura Kamara and other stakeholders will be crucial in resolving these internal conflicts. The party’s ability to overcome these challenges and restore unity will likely determine its future trajectory and effectiveness in the political landscape of Sierra Leone.

As the APC seeks to rebuild and strengthen its internal cohesion, the party will need to navigate these challenges carefully to restore its image and effectiveness, both domestically and on the international stage.
