The Mellon Street Community was filled with joy and gratitude as renowned Sierra Leonean music superstar, Jomapel Yankee, made a generous donation of Twenty Million Old Leones in support of community development initiatives on Friday, 22nd August, 2025. The contribution is primarily directed towards rehabilitating the community’s stony and death-trap main road, which, for years, has been a nightmare for residents, motorists, and traders.
Speaking during the symbolic presentation, Jomapel Yankee, who hails from Mellon Street Community, emphasized the importance of giving back to the community that nurtured him. “This community made me who I am today. I owe much of my success to the support I received here, and this is my way of showing appreciation,” he said, adding that development should be a shared responsibility between citizens and government.
Community leaders, elders, and youths welcomed the gesture with overwhelming appreciation, describing it as both timely and impactful.
Chairman Idriss Rollings Kamara, popularly known as Chairman Pilot, received the donation on behalf of the community. He profusely thanked Jomapel Yankee for his kindhearted and timely support, stressing that the community is in dire need of help, especially to address the road which has become a death trap and suffered severe damage due to the rains. He noted that the poor road condition has hindered movement, posed safety risks, and negatively affected economic activities.
Chairman Pilot pledged to ensure the funds are used transparently so that the proposed community development initiative becomes a reality. He further hailed Jomapel Yankee not only as a music star, but also as a true role model, whose humility, generosity, and commitment to community development continue to inspire.
The event concluded with cultural performances, heartfelt prayers, and a renewed sense of unity and hope for the community’s transformation.
