The whereabouts of Abdul Karim Smith, a prominent youth activist and foot soldier of the opposition All People’s Congress [APC], remain unknown nearly two years after he went into hiding.
Smith was a well-known community campaigner and was considered a close associate of Adams Kanu, who in turn worked closely with Idrissa Hamid Kamara, popularly known as “Leatherboot” — the former bodyguard to ex-President Ernest Bai Koroma. Within APC circles, Smith was described as a “blue-eyed boy” of Adams Kanu.
From August 11 To A Nationwide Manhunt
Smith’s name came into public focus following the August 10-11 2022 protests across Sierra Leone that left dozens dead. In the government’s crackdown that followed, several opposition figures were arrested, including Adams Kanu, who was charged and detained at Pademba Road Correctional Centre over alleged involvement in a coup plot.
While Kanu was arrested, Abdul Karim Smith fled. The Sierra Leone Police later declared him wanted in connection with the events.
November 2023 And New Allegations
On November 26, 2023, an alleged attempted coup was staged in Freetown. During security operations that followed, “Leatherboot” was killed after an encounter with state security forces during his arrest. Adams Kanu is also believed to have been among dozens killed in the aftermath. Human rights groups have since called for independent investigations into the killings.
In the months since, rumors have circulated within opposition circles accusing Abdul Karim Smith of acting as an informant to the police — claims alleging that information he provided led to the arrest and death of Leatherboot and other senior APC members.
The allegations have had consequences back home. Family members of Smith in Freetown say they have received threats and have publicly expressed concern about his safety and current location. They deny the accusations and say they have not heard from him.

The Sierra Leone Police maintain that Smith is still wanted and that the manhunt continues.
A Case Still Unresolved
For supporters, Abdul Karim Smith represents one of many APC youths caught up in the political turbulence since 2022. For authorities, he remains a person of interest in ongoing investigations.
With no confirmed sighting and conflicting narratives about his role, the question remains: Where is Abdul Karim Smith?
Rights groups and family members are calling for clarity — whether through due process, safe return, or a transparent investigation into all the events surrounding August 2022 and November 2023.
