A POTENTIAL OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUTH NETWORKING
Delivering the keynote address at the launch of the Youth Climate Action Fund (YCAF), the Chairman of the Kambia District Council, Mohamed Mansarico Mansaray, described climate change as a community challenge that requires collective action. He stressed that protecting the environment is the responsibility of every citizen and called on communities to take the lead in safeguarding their natural resources.
Chairman Mansaray highlighted some of the major causes of climate change and urged communities to engage in meaningful discussions on practical solutions to the environmental challenges confronting Kambia District and Sierra Leone as a whole. He encouraged prospective applicants to develop project proposals that respond to the realities and specific climate needs of the district.
He further called for innovative youth-led solutions that could serve as models for replication in other districts facing similar environmental challenges. According to the Chairman, the Youth Climate Action Fund will provide grants ranging from US$1,000 to US$5,000, with a maximum of eight qualified youth groups expected to receive funding. The implementation period for the projects is scheduled to run from November 2026 to April 2027.
Emphasizing transparency and inclusivity, Chairman Mansaray urged all prospective beneficiaries to implement their projects responsibly so that future funding opportunities can be extended to more youth groups. He noted that while the Council would provide oversight, it would not interfere with project implementation.
“The Council has no power to micromanage the project in any way. We expect the very best from those who will be entrusted with these grants,” he said.
The Chairman also expressed concern over the growing environmental threats to Kambia District’s water resources. He warned that unless urgent measures are taken to protect water sources, the district could face serious challenges in providing safe and reliable drinking water in the future. He therefore called on duty bearers and community stakeholders to take proactive steps to address the situation.
Reaffirming the Council’s commitment to youth empowerment, Chairman Mansaray assured young people that the Youth Climate Action Fund was established specifically to support their ideas and innovations. He encouraged them to submit bold and impactful proposals capable of delivering lasting environmental and social benefits.
He further urged young people to use the programme as a platform to build meaningful partnerships and expand their professional networks.
