Wanted, Missing,, Feared in Danger…

Mohamed Conteh Mystery

By Osman Kamara

For years, Mohamed Conteh lived a quiet life as a young businessman in Sierra Leone, keeping a deeply personal secret hidden from public view. Today, his whereabouts remain unknown, and those familiar with his story believe he disappeared after a violent incident exposed him to serious danger because of his sexual orientation.
Born and raised in Freetown, Conteh grew up in a conservative Muslim environment where homosexuality is widely regarded as unacceptable both culturally and religiously. Like many LGBTQ individuals living in societies where same-sex relationships are heavily stigmatized, he reportedly spent much of his life concealing his identity for fear of rejection, discrimination, and possible violence.
His struggle began during his teenage years when he realized he was attracted to other boys. At a time when discussions about sexual orientation were virtually nonexistent within his community, he found himself grappling with emotions he could not openly express.
During his school years, Conteh formed a close friendship with a fellow student named Alhaji. What started as a friendship later developed into a secret romantic relationship. The two maintained their relationship discreetly, aware of the potential consequences if their sexuality became known.
Their relationship continued until tragedy struck. Alhaji reportedly died following complications during an appendix operation, leaving Conteh devastated. Those close to him described the loss as one of the most painful experiences of his life.
Years later, while managing his business activities, Conteh met Abdul Kallay. The two developed a friendship that eventually evolved into a romantic relationship after discovering they shared similar experiences and feelings regarding their sexuality.
Like his previous relationship, the bond between Conteh and Abdul remained hidden from public scrutiny. The pair reportedly understood the risks associated with being openly gay in Sierra Leone and therefore maintained a low profile.
According to accounts of the incident, Conteh and Abdul were together in Freetown when they were seen expressing affection toward one another. Several passersby allegedly witnessed the encounter and reacted angrily.
What followed was a violent confrontation.
The two men were reportedly attacked by a group of individuals who accused them of engaging in behavior considered unacceptable within the community. The situation quickly escalated as more people gathered, and both men were allegedly subjected to physical assault and public humiliation.
The incident attracted significant attention and reportedly exposed Conteh’s sexual orientation to a wider audience.
Following the attack, concerns for his safety intensified.
In a society where homosexuality remains highly stigmatized, exposure can have severe consequences. Individuals suspected of being gay often face hostility, social exclusion, threats, and violence. For someone from a devout Muslim background, the pressures can be even greater due to strong religious beliefs regarding same sex relationships.
Reports later emerged that Conteh had become a target of public hostility. There were fears that he could face persecution if his location became known. As a result, he disappeared from public view shortly after the incident.
Since then, no confirmed information regarding his whereabouts has emerged publicly.
His disappearance has fueled concerns among human rights advocates and individuals familiar with the challenges faced by LGBTQ persons in Sierra Leone. Many point to his case as an example of the difficult reality confronting people whose sexual orientation places them at odds with prevailing cultural and religious norms.
Today, Mohamed Conteh remains missing.
While many questions remain unanswered, his story reflects the fear, secrecy, and vulnerability experienced by numerous LGBTQ individuals who continue to navigate life in environments where acceptance remains elusive.
For those who knew him, he is remembered not as a controversy or a headline, but as a young man whose life changed dramatically after his private identity became public. Until his whereabouts are known, uncertainty continues to surround his fate, while concerns remain that his safety would be seriously threatened if he were located and publicly identified.
