UBA Enhances Green Environment

In its bid to foster a green environment in Sierra Leone and mitigate Climate Change impact of the country, the United Bank for Africa (UBA-SL) in collaboration with Auradicals Foundation, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to embark on tree planting at Mile 91, and are targeting 5,000 trees.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, the Sierra Leonean Managing Director, Alhaji Samoura, explained that it is part of their four ideal plan to embrace the environment, and since they were approached by the Auradicals Foundation, and the Foundation’s proposal resonates well with their vision, the UBA decided to sign the partnership to enhance green environment to address Climate Change, which is the current concern of world leaders. He stressed that the said proposal was looked at and forwarded to their parent company for further assessment and approval. He expressed pleasure in announcing that the said proposal has been approved by the UBA parent body.

In his statement prior to the signing ceremony, a Representative of the Auradicals Foundation, ….. was upbeat with the partnership, adding that as Sierra Leoneans and conscious of the impact of deforestation and climate change on the country, it is of utmost importance that actions be taken to mitigate the effect, and part of this action is the planting of Trees. He furthered that a waste land lying along the Mile 91 axis has been identified and feasibility studies conducted in respect of its suitability and durability for the said endeavor. He noted that engagements were made with locals in the area, including elders, and that their reception of the planned project was wonderful, as they showed willingness to own the project, adding that without the locals owning the project, all endeavors will be in vain. He furthered that they will be planting cash crop trees, like cashew, etc, so that while replenishing the deforested area, they will also be contributing to development of the economic activities of the locals.

The Foundation’s rep maintained that in the early years of its establishment, they were focused on advocating for rights of people and became the voice of the voiceless, but that they have now turned their attention to working towards the development of the country and addressing issues like climate change and others.

The ceremony was climaxed by the signing of the MOU between the Auradicals Foundation on the one part, and UBA Foundation on the other part. Gracing the occasion were top management of the UBA in Freetown, as well as other staff, and representatives of the Auradicals Foundation, under the watchful eyes of the media.
