Over Name Similarity with Clerk of Parliament…

Hon. Kemokoh Conteh Sets the Records Straight

CLARIFICATION TO THE DISINFORMATION CAMOUFLAGED UNDER THE SIMILARITY OF NAMES

Our attention has been drawn to the disinformation around the similarity of names of the newly appointed Clerk of Parliament, and the substantive Honorable Kemokoh Conteh of Constituency 108. Similarity should not be used by any professional journalist to hastily publish an incorrect news. Journalists are under legal and moral obligation to report accurate and balanced news. Traditional media should be better informed, especially at this cutting edge of digitalization. Objectivity, accuracy and truth are core uncompromised values of journalism.

Therefore, the above-mentioned office has painstakingly endeavored to educate all and sundry on the constitutional provisions for the appointment of the Clerk of Parliament, which is totally different from the ELECTION of a Member of Parliament within the jurisdiction of Sierra Leone.

Pursuant to section 82 (1) of the CONSTITUTION OF SIERRA LEONE ACT NO 6 OF 1991;

There shall be a Clerk of Parliament who shall be appointed by the President acting in consultation with the Public Service Commission, and shall be responsible for the administration of Parliament.

(2) The office of the Clerk of Parliament and the offices of the members of his staff shall be public offices.

The above excerpt clearly expresses the statutory procedure to appoint the Clerk of Parliament. Nobody will gainsay how popular the procedures of electing a Member of Parliament are among Sierra Leoneans.

Our regards to all friends and supporters who called to verify and clarify the said disinformation.

Our office is open to all professional journalists who intend to uphold the tenets of journalism. We owe it to each other to protect our hard won credibility.

END!
