Lifeline Nehemiah & MOH Hold Voluntary Blood Donation Campaign
Lifeline Nehemiah Projects (LNP), together with the Koidu Government Hospital under the Ministry of Health and Sanitation has held a voluntary blood donation drive to commemorate World Blood Donor Day.
The drive, which took place on Sunday 14th June 2026 at Punduru village and Sewafe in Kenema and Kono districts, aimed to boost voluntary blood donations and raise awareness about the life-saving impact of safe blood and blood products.
Sixty (60) units of blood were donated and collected during the exercise in both Punduru and Sewafe communities.
Speaking at the event, LNP’s Project Manager, Mohamed Turay said the global and national theme for World Blood Donor Day on June 14, 2026, in Sierra Leone is ‘’One drop of humanity. Give blood save lives’’
However, Lifeline uses that to localize the concept and theme: “Gi Blood 4 Save Lives.”
“Every two seconds, someone in the world needs blood. In Sierra Leone, shortages put mothers, children, and accident victims at risk. Today, our youth and community members choose to be heroes without capes,” he said.
“Voluntary blood donation remains low in many communities due to myths and lack of access to donation centers.
“Lifeline Nehemiah Projects works with children, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups. Many of them face emergencies where blood is the difference between life and death. This drive is about solidarity,” Turay stated.
Mariatu Duraman, Blood Bank Manager at Koidu Government Hospital commended Lifeline Nehemiah Projects for taking the campaign to the communities, emphasizing that voluntary, unpaid donors are safest source of blood. “Events like help us close the gap, especially during the rainy season when malaria and maternal complications increase demand,” she added.
Town Speaker at Punduru village, Chief Charles Vawah donated for the first time. “I used to think donating blood would make me weak. The LNP team explained everything to me. Now I know I can save lives with my blood. I will continue to do it again,” he promised.
World Blood Donor Day is marked annually on June 14 to thank donors and highlight the need for safe blood. This year’s global call urges more young people to step forward as donors to ensure a sustainable blood supply.
