The Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (CDHR), with the support of the Embassy of Germany in Freetown, has embarked on an ambitious project aimed at promoting gender equality, women’s empowerment, and participation in northern Sierra Leone. This project covers four districts, twelve chiefdoms, and sixteen communities, reflecting a broad approach to tackling systemic gender issues.
The project was launched with a focus on addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by women in northern Sierra Leone. Madame Florence Baby Sesay, Program Officer for CDHR, emphasized the pressing need to address gender inequalities that have persisted for far too long, particularly in the context of family property rights.
Project Duration and Aims: The seven-month project is designed to lobby for women’s rights and promote their empowerment across various domains. The specific outcomes are targeted in three main areas:
Land Rights:
Objective: To significantly increase women’s rights to land ownership and access.
Implementation: Conducting awareness campaigns and educational programs about the Land Rights Act.
Goal: Achieve 100% participation in awareness-raising activities, ensuring that women in the targeted communities are fully informed about their rights to land.
Political Participation:
Objective: To enhance women’s participation in political processes and decision-making roles.
Implementation: Encouraging and supporting women to run for political office, providing training and resources to female candidates, and advocating for policies that support women in politics.
Goal: Increase the number of women actively participating in politics and holding political offices in the targeted regions.
Leadership and Cultural Participation:
Objective: To ensure greater involvement of women in leadership positions and cultural activities.
Implementation: Leadership training programs, mentorship opportunities, and cultural events that highlight women’s contributions.
Goal: Increase the presence and influence of women in leadership and cultural roles, fostering an environment where women’s voices are heard and respected.
Target Population: The project aims to reach and impact 1,924 individuals across the selected communities. This includes women, community leaders, and other stakeholders, creating a comprehensive network of support and advocacy.
Community Involvement: The launch event brought together various facets of the community, including women-led organizations, local leaders, and representatives from different sectors. This collaborative approach is essential for the project’s success, ensuring that the initiative is rooted in the needs and aspirations of the community.
