STOCKHOLM, Sweden, 23 August 2026 – Sierra Leone’s Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation (MWRS) , Dr. Sao-Kpato Hannah Isatta Macarthy, is set to participate in a high-level session at World Water Week 2026 in Stockholm, Sweden, August 23–27, 2026, focusing on strengthening the monitoring of the Means of Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6).
The session, titled “Catalysing Action: Strengthening Monitoring of SDG 6 Means of Implementation,” will bring together national governments, development partners, UN agencies and water sector practitioners to examine how improved monitoring of financing, governance, institutions, capacity and data can accelerate progress on water and sanitation.
The session will build on discussions from the 2025 Financing for Development process and the 2026 High-Level Preparatory Meeting in Dakar, where participants emphasized the importance of strengthening monitoring of the factors that enable countries to deliver on SDG 6.
The discussion will highlight financial flows as a critical component of the Means of Implementation, while also examining institutional leadership, governance, capacity and data systems.
According to the Minister, who will be taking part in one of the sessions, “better monitoring can help countries identify systemic bottlenecks, improve investment readiness, strengthen accountability and make more informed policy and investment decisions. It will also draw on data and tools developed by organisations including WHO, OECD and the World Bank.
Dr Macarthy will also provide a country perspective from Sierra Leone during the session, contributing to discussions on the practical challenges and opportunities involved in strengthening national monitoring systems for SDG 6.
Her participation will place Sierra Leone’s water resources and sanitation priorities within a broader international conversation on mobilising resources and translating global commitments into tangible progress.
The session will also explore how countries can institutionalise Means of Implementation monitoring within national planning and sector review processes, with discussions expected to inform preparations for the 2026 UN Water Conference and the development of the post-2030 global monitoring framework.
