The passing of Hon. Alhaji Minkailu Mansaray has reminded Sierra Leone of a truth we too often forget: unity is possible when politics does not stand in the way.

For years, the rivalry between the APC and SLPP has defined our national life, frequently turning disagreements into divisions. Yet, at the Civic Ceremony in Freetown and the Laying in State at Parliament, we witnessed something extraordinary. Leaders from both parties, President Julius Maada Bio and First Lady, Fatima Bio, Speaker, Hon. Segepoh Thomas, Opposition Leade, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, Ministers, Party Chairmen, and APC flagbearer aspirants, stood together. In grief, they showed us what Sierra Leone can be when we rise above partisan battles.

The tributes were powerful. SLPP Chairman, Sir Jimmy Batilo Songa, spoke passionately about Mansaray’s selflessness during moments of national crisis. Ambassador Usman Foday Yansaneh reflected on their long-standing collaboration and friendship. Even though the President did not speak directly, his presence and the words delivered on behalf of his government carried dignity and respect.

This was not APC versus SLPP. It was Sierra Leone, one nation, united in mourning, honouring a man whose life embodied service and sacrifice. For a brief moment, the bitterness of politics gave way to camaraderie, respect, and shared humanity.

That moment should not be forgotten. It should serve as a reminder that our country’s progress depends not on the triumph of one party over another, but on our ability to stand together when it matters most. If grief can unite us, so too can hope, vision, and love for Sierra Leone.

When politics does not stand in the way, Sierra Leone wins. The challenge before us is to make that unity more than a fleeting moment, to make it the foundation of our future.
