Tensions are reportedly high in Fourah Bay, a traditionally conservative and predominantly Muslim community in the East End of Freetown, following reports that a local man, Mohamed I. Jalloh, has been forced to flee the area after his alleged same-sex relationship was discovered.

Jalloh, a resident of Forster Street and a practicing Muslim known for publicly observing his five daily prayers at various mosques within the neighborhood, is said to have been secretly involved in a homosexual relationship. Sources within the community claim that his private life came to light under controversial circumstances, sparking outrage among some Islamic youth who have since been actively pursuing him.

Eyewitnesses report that the incident became public knowledge during an Islamic wedding ceremony held in the community. It is alleged that someone familiar with Jalloh’s private activities confronted or exposed him during the event, leading to immediate backlash. Tensions quickly escalated, prompting Jalloh to flee the community amid what are reported to be serious threats to his life.

Fourah Bay is widely recognized for its strong Islamic identity and adherence to conservative religious values, where homosexuality is both socially taboo and legally contentious. In Sierra Leone, while same-sex relationships are criminalized under colonial-era laws, enforcement varies and incidents involving members of the LGBTQ+ community often lead to public shaming, ostracization, or even violence.

Community leaders and human rights activists have expressed concern over the growing hostility and lack of legal protection for individuals accused of same-sex relations. So far, no official statement has been issued by the Sierra Leone Police regarding the threats against Jalloh, nor is it clear whether any arrests have been made in connection to the pursuit by Islamic youth.

Jalloh’s current whereabouts remain unknown, and there are fears for his safety given the intensity of the backlash. The case has reignited conversations about LGBTQ+ rights, personal privacy, and the influence of religious and cultural norms in Sierra Leonean society.
Homosexuality remains a highly sensitive and polarizing issue in Sierra Leone. While the country has made progress on broader human rights issues, protections for LGBTQ+ individuals are minimal, and societal acceptance is limited. Incidents such as this highlight the ongoing risks faced by LGBTQ+ Sierra Leoneans, particularly in conservative communities.

Advocacy groups are calling for greater awareness, legal reform, and protections to ensure that all citizens  regardless of their sexual orientation are safeguarded from violence, harassment, and discrimination.
