Freetown, Sierra Leone –

Demonstrating significant progress in its public health strategy, Sierra Leone has taken a major leap forward in combating the Mpox outbreak, with the confirmed arrival of an additional 50,000 doses of Mpox vaccines. The delivery, orchestrated by the Ministry of Health under the leadership of Dr. Austin Demby, significantly amplifies the nation’s capacity to protect its population.

This crucial consignment, secured within a remarkably short six-month timeframe, despite high continental demand for the limited global vaccine supply, arrives through vital multilateral partnerships. Key international allies, including the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), Gavi – the Vaccine Alliance, and UNICEF played instrumental roles in facilitating this shipment. This collaborative effort underscores the global commitment to supporting Sierra Leone’s response.

The Ministry of Health emphasized that this new batch is not an isolated intervention, but a powerful reinforcement of the country’s existing, and reportedly effective, response framework. Officials credit a combination of proactive measures – encompassing rigorous active surveillance to detect cases swiftly, prompt isolation of infected individuals to break chains of transmission, and accessible treatment protocols – with driving a steady nationwide decline in positive Mpox cases observed in recent months.

The integration of these 50,000 additional vaccines is expected to substantially accelerate these positive trends. Health authorities project that the expanded vaccination campaign will directly contribute to faster curtailment of virus transmission, a further reduction in severe illness and fatalities, and ultimately, bringing the persistent outbreak under firmer control. The targeted deployment will likely focus on high-risk groups and areas, maximizing the impact of each dose.

This latest acquisition brings Sierra Leone’s total secured vaccine doses to over 200,000, a notable achievement reflecting persistent diplomatic and operational efforts by the government and its international partners in a competitive landscape. Health authorities continue to stress that while vaccines are a critical tool, the collective resolve of the public remains paramount. They reiterated an urgent call for citizens to fully cooperate with ongoing surveillance activities, present for vaccination when eligible and invited, adhere to isolation guidance if symptomatic, and practice recommended hygiene measures. The Ministry underscored that defeating Mpox hinges on the sustained partnership between the government’s coordinated actions and the active participation of every community member across Sierra Leone.
