Education Minister Opens New Boarding Home in Kailahun

The Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), Concrad Sackey, officially inaugurated the new government secondary school for girls in Kailahun, marking a significant stride in enhancing educational opportunities for young girls in the district

This notable project, aimed at providing a conducive learning environment, was made possible through the generous support of various partners, including the World Bank, Irish Aid, the Department for International Development (DFID), GPE Transforming Education, and Education Above All (EAA).

The newly constructed facility boasts modern amenities, including well-furnished classrooms and dormitories to accommodate students from diverse backgrounds.

During the opening ceremony, Minister Sackey expressed heartfelt gratitude to the donor partners for their unwavering support and commitment to improving education in Sierra Leone. He also recognized the local authorities in Kailahun for their critical role in providing the land necessary for the school’s establishment.

Minister Sackey highlighted the transformative impact the school is expected to have on the lives of young girls in the area. He underscored that the institution will play a vital role in reducing the prevalence of teenage pregnancy, early marriage, and sexual and gender-based violence against girls, thereby fostering a safer and more empowering environment for education.

In his address, the minister urged local authorities to embrace ownership of the facility, emphasizing that sustainable impact relies on community involvement and stewardship. He also called upon teachers to deliver their best in terms of performance and efficiency, aiming for excellence in educational outcomes.

The ceremony featured remarks from various dignitaries, including the paramount chief of Luawa Chiefdom, who expressed profound appreciation for the government’s initiative. He described the school as a blessing for the district, and pledged to provide additional land to the ministry if required for future expansions. The paramount chief further advocated for the construction of more classrooms and staff quarters to ensure effective service delivery in the education sector.

In a poignant reminder to parents, Chief Banya urged them to take full responsibility for their children’s well-being during school holidays, emphasizing the importance of parental care in their academic journey.

As Kailahun celebrates this monumental development, the community looks forward to witnessing the positive changes this new school will bring, not only in educational attainment, but also in the overall empowerment of young girls in the region.

The collaborative efforts of the government, local authorities, and international partners signify a promising future for education in Sierra Leone, paving the way for a generation of empowered and educated young women.
