Tombo Couple Goes Missing Amid Pressure from Traditional Secret Societies

By Western Area Reporter Freetown, Sierra Leone

A married couple from Tombo Community in Western Area Rural, Sierra Leone, has been reported missing for several weeks amid alleged threats and intimidation linked to the area’s traditional secret societies, the Poro for men and Bondo for women. The couple, identified as Mohamed Bangura and Rachel Bangura, reportedly fled their home after facing mounting social and cultural pressures.

Neighbors and family members say all attempts to reach the couple by phone or through relatives have been unsuccessful, raising concern over their safety and current whereabouts. Sources in Tombo allege that the Banguras faced escalating scrutiny for resisting participation in customary practices and initiation rites enforced by the influential Poro and Bondo societies.

Mr. Bangura, according to local accounts, was accused of disrespecting the Poro society, a powerful male institution that traditionally governs community leadership, conflict resolution, and initiation rituals. Reports indicate that narratives surrounding his perceived failures spread rapidly, subjecting him to potential penalties and social exclusion.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Bangura faced similar pressure from the Bondo society, which oversees female initiation rites and upholds cultural norms. Community insiders say she was threatened and harassed for allegedly failing to comply with prescribed rituals, highlighting the intense influence these secret societies wield over daily life in the area.

The couple reportedly confided in close family members that they no longer felt safe in Tombo, fearing that cultural scrutiny and social sanctions might follow them even if they relocated elsewhere in the country. With no confirmed information on their location, some locals speculate the couple may have sought refuge outside Sierra Leone to escape ongoing persecution.

Human rights advocates in the region have raised alarm over the impact of Poro and Bondo societies on vulnerable individuals, noting that the groups operate largely outside the formal legal system, leaving little recourse for those targeted.

The disappearance of Mohamed and Rachel Bangura underscores the enduring tension between deeply rooted cultural practices and personal safety, highlighting the challenges faced by individuals resisting traditional societal pressures in parts of Sierra Leone.
