Sierra Leone to Receive Additional Mpox Vaccines Amid Surge in Cases

Sierra Leone is expected to receive more mpox vaccines soon, following high-level discussions between the country’s Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, and Dr. Sania Nishtar, CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 78th World Health Assembly.

During their discussion, Dr. Demby expressed deep appreciation for Gavi’s swift support during Sierra Leone’s recent mpox outbreak and acknowledged Dr. Nishtar’s recent visit to the country, where she joined in African Vaccination Week activities and met with President Julius Maada Bio.

Providing an update on the outbreak, Dr. Demby detailed the government’s immediate response measures, which included declaring a public health emergency, shifting to facility-based care, and establishing specialized treatment centers in key locations.

He also noted ongoing collaboration with partners to ensure vaccine availability.

Dr. Nishtar praised Sierra Leone’s rapid and coordinated public health response and reassured the country of Gavi’s continued support.

She confirmed that efforts are underway to secure additional mpox vaccine doses in coordination with the Ministry of Health.

Dr. Demby was joined by Sierra Leone’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Ambassador Dr. Lansana Gberie, underscoring the country’s diplomatic commitment to strengthening global health partnerships.
