Sierra Leone Elected to UN ECOSOC

Sierra Leone has been elected to the prestigious United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2026–2028 term.

This milestone represents a major vote of confidence in the country’s ongoing contributions to international cooperation and global development.

ECOSOC plays a critical role in shaping and evaluating international economic, social, and environmental policies. It serves as a key platform for dialogue, recommendations to UN member states, and coordination among various specialized agencies — all essential to driving global progress on development goals.

Sierra Leone’s successful bid for a seat — which secured an impressive 186 votes, the joint highest among the elected members — was strongly supported by the African Union.

The country’s priorities at ECOSOC will be guided by the PATH Agenda, emphasizing peacebuilding, food security, technological innovation, and human capital development.

With this election, Sierra Leone will transition from its current role on the UN Security Council to ECOSOC, reinforcing its steadfast commitment to the United Nations’ core values of peace, development, and human rights.

President Julius Maada Bio welcomed the news on social media, stating:
