Amb. Sadiq Silla Hits The Ground Running In Libya

Following his successful accreditation as Ambassador of the Republic of Sierra Leone to Libya, Ambassador Sadiq Silla has taken swift action to address the welfare of Sierra Leonean citizens in the country.

Ambassador Silla’s first engagement focused on facilitating the voluntary repatriation of Sierra Leonean migrants. He visited the Migrant Reception Centre (MRC) at the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to discuss procedural matters and ensure a smooth process for those wishing to return home.

Demonstrating his commitment to protecting the rights of his countrymen, Ambassador Silla then visited the Directorate for Combating Illegal Migration (DCIM), where hе successfully advocated for the release of six detained Sierra Leonean migrants held on immigration-related offences.

The Deputy Head of DCIM, warmly receiving Ambassador Silla’s delegation, granted the request, emphasizing that most Sierra Leonean migrants are seeking better opportunities rather than engaging in criminal activity. The Deputy Head pledged open access for the ambassador to visit and assist Sierra Leonean nationals held in detention centres.

Ambassador Silla expressed gratitude for the cooperation, and pledged ongoing collaboration with the DCIM. He stated, “We apologize for any violations of immigration laws by our citizens and wish for their safe and swift repatriation to Sierra Leone.” Three women-Hawa Sesay, Hana Kanu, (Baby) and Mariama Jalloh and three men; Mohamed Jallon (minor), Mohamed Thairu Jallon, and Alpha Jalloh were released as a result of the Ambassador’s intervention.

Further solidifying diplomatic relations, Ambassador Silla also met with the Prime Minister, Taher Al- Baour, in charge of managing the work of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to discuss bilateral ties between Sierra Leone and Libya.

It was stated that this series of engagements marks a strong start to Ambassador Silla’s mission, prioritizing the welfare of his countrymen while simultaneously strengthening diplomatic relations.
