Over the weekend, Robert Kondema Kargbo, affectionately known as ROB, officially declared his candidacy for the position of National Deputy Chairman of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) at the party’s headquarters in Freetown. The event was attended by a diverse array of supporters and party officials, representing various factions within the party, all of whom delivered enthusiastic endorsements of Kargbo’s bold political step.
The gathering brought together strong-willed representatives from support groups such as Team ROB Texaco Branch, Team ROB Thunder Hill, and Team ROB Looking Town, alongside Councilor Gbla, who gracefully chaired the program. Each speaker emphasized the vital role Kargbo is poised to play in fostering unity and progress within the party as it navigates the intricate landscape leading up to the 2028 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
In his heartfelt declaration, Kargbo expressed gratitude and excitement about his evolving political journey, saying, “I feel honored and privileged this afternoon to take another gigantic step in my political career.” He articulated a vision for an inclusive leadership approach that emphasizes collaboration, stating his intention to create an environment where every party member—regardless of their allegiance or faction—feels valued and empowered.
Kargbo, whose political tenure with the SLPP began in 2013, highlighted his extensive experience and commitment to party ideals. He reflected on his role as a commissioner on the Board of the National Telecommunications Commission (NATCOM), appointed by His Excellency, Rtd Brigadier Julius Maada Bio, where he earned recognition as the youngest commissioner since the Commission’s establishment. This experience, coupled with his dedication, positions him as a prominent candidate for the deputy chairmanship role.
“My contributions to national development,” Kargbo declared, “can be exhibited through my work as Publisher of the Heritage Newspaper and Managing Director of Heritage Multimedia Group.” He proudly noted the significance of his initiatives, which have generated employment opportunities for over 200 young individuals in Sierra Leone and extended support to women across the country through philanthropic efforts and microcredit programs.
Kargbo’s remarks also underscored the importance of grassroots activism and mobilization efforts in securing electoral victories for the party. He recounted how his support played a critical role in winning seats in Freetown and Port Loko—a testament to his effectiveness in rallying support for the SLPP.
A keen advocate for youth empowerment, Kargbo shared his commitment to invigorating the party’s vision by channeling resources and opportunities toward younger generations. His initiatives over the past decade—including the establishment of a community Adult Literacy center—reflect his dedication to social justice, skill training, and advocating for women and youth inclusivity. Kargbo firmly believes in a bottom-up approach for solving internal challenges within the party, asserting that collective action among like-minded individuals can address complexities more effectively than top-down mandates.
“The solutions are from the BOTTOM, UP,” Kargbo emphasized, calling for a consensus among party members to unite for growth and development. He acknowledged the current climate of division within the SLPP and urged leaders to proactively seek collaborative solutions before the upcoming elections. “We must come to a consensus—an elite bargain—that we will work together to put our party firmly towards growth and development.”
As he laid out his vision for the future of the SLPP, Kargbo stressed the need for unity amidst diversity, noting, “Our party is at a critical phase of division and disunity.” He intends to make every member feel worthy and significant, reiterating his commitment to foster a collective identity among party members when the party faces future electoral challenges.
Kargbo’s motivation to run for the deputy chairman position is fueled by his belief in President Bio’s vision of empowering young leaders to take the reins of power. In his closing remarks, he encouraged delegates to join his cause with a rallying call, “Join Team RKK to build a more vibrant and invigorated SLPP that will revive the current dormant office of Deputy National Chairman into one that works for us, creates jobs, provides scholarships for our children, and brings prosperity for our beloved nation.”
With a promise to serve with integrity and diligence, Kargbo concluded his declaration, urging delegates to lend him their support during the forthcoming 2025 national delegate conference. “Join me as we move forward—united in purpose, strong in spirit, and determined to lead,” he urged passionately, as attendees erupted in applause to back his aspirations.
Robert Kondema Kargbo’s declaration marks a significant moment in the SLPP’s political landscape, showcasing a commitment not only to his party but also to the broader aspirations of Sierra Leone and its youth.
