The recent social media reactions surrounding the comment made by Civil Rights Activist Alphonso Manley regarding the usage of substandard mobile devices and continuous background data consumption have taken an unfortunate and misleading turn. These reactions do not reflect the true intent of his message nor his long-standing dedication to the welfare of the people of Sierra Leone. Activist Alphonso Manley remains one of the most consistent, courageous, people-centered, and nationally respected civil society voices in our country. For over a decade, he has stood firmly with citizens” Challenging Government excesses, questioning systemic failures, defending the poor, and championing accountability in service delivery. His service to the nation cannot be overshadowed by a moment of misinterpretation.

It is important to clarify that at no point did Activist Alphonso Manley defend or justify the unfair billing practices, poor customer care, or exploitative tendencies of certain Mobile Network Operators (MNOs). Sierra Leoneans have long lamented issues such as frequent and unexplained data depletion, hidden charges in service bundles, inconsistent network quality, unregulated tariff adjustments, and lack of transparency in billing. These concerns remain legitimate, and Civil Society continues to stand firmly with the people in demanding fairness, affordability, and improved digital service delivery. Activist Manley has been among the forefront voices condemning such practices over the years.
The portion of his recent statement referencing substandard phones and background app usage was a technical explanation, not a defence of mobile companies. Globally, technology experts recognise that uncertified mobile devices drain data, malfunction easily, and allow apps to consume megabytes even when the phone appears idle. Highlighting these realities does not transfer responsibility away from mobile companies; rather, it presents a complete, honest picture of the factors contributing to data loss. Civil Society has an obligation to educate citizens truthfully, even when the message is not the most popular.
Civil Society activism is not a popularity contest but a service rooted in integrity, truth, and accountability. Activist Manley’s career has been defined by non-partisanship, selflessness, and an unwavering commitment to amplifying the voice of ordinary Sierra Leoneans. His honesty has never been for sale, and his advocacy has never been influenced by political affiliation, private interest, or corporate advantage. Those who know his track record understand that he is one of the few voices in the civic space who cannot be bought, silenced, or diverted from his mission of national service.
Attacking the character of an activist does not resolve the long-standing telecom challenges affecting the nation. Instead, it diverts attention from the collective fight for affordable data, transparent billing systems, improved consumer protection, and stronger regulatory oversight. Now more than ever, Sierra Leone needs strong, knowledgeable, and fearless civil society actors who can defend citizens against all forms of injustice. We must avoid weakening the civic space through misinterpretations and emotional reactions that overshadow the actual issues.
We therefore commend Activist Alphonso Manley for his continued commitment, patriotic leadership, and lifelong service to public accountability. He has earned national respect through action, sacrifice, and consistency. His work has inspired many emerging activists and strengthened the civic landscape across the country. Sierra Leone appreciates him, Civil Society respects him, and history will undoubtedly honour him for his contributions.
We encourage the public to verify information, engage with issues constructively, and avoid narratives that weaken the fight for consumer justice. The struggle for affordable, transparent, and reliable telecommunications services continues” and we must stand united in this cause.
