MTI Takes Action Against Substandard Iron Rod Imports
By Mohamed Kargbo
Many houses have recently collapsed, resulting in deaths due to heavy rains and the importation of substandard iron rods into the country. Addressing this issue, the Ministry of Information and Civic Education (MoICE) hosted Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Fatmata Kargbo, at the Government Weekly Press Briefing on August 20, 2024, at the conference room of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Tower Hill, Freetown.
In her opening remarks, Minister Fatmata Kargbo commended the vibrant Minister of MoICE, Ceebah, for his outstanding work in disseminating information and bringing the government closer to the people. She offered prayers for those who lost their lives during this challenging time.
Last July, when assuming leadership at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, it was discovered that importers had brought in many substandard iron rods. The Ministry convened a meeting with industry and security players to address this issue. Minister Kargbo emphasized the importance of stopping the importation of substandard iron rods and revealed that some importers admitted to having substandard stocks. Despite cautioning importers, some were still bringing in substandard rods. As a result, the Ministry, along with other relevant agencies, closed down 10 shops to combat this problem. Minister Kargbo stressed the need for quality iron rods in the market to safeguard lives.
To prevent the importation of substandard iron rods, Minister Kargbo highlighted that importers must first go to the Ministry to obtain a certificate of recognition before proceeding with their imports. After importation, the Standard Bureau, National Consumer Protection Commission (NCPC), and Standard Compliance will verify the products at the Port of entry.
The Ministry has conducted several meetings to raise awareness among importers and has imposed fines on defaulters, depositing the money in the consolidated fund. Minister Kargbo also warned against the practice of using relatives instead of engineers to construct houses.
In an effort to reduce dependence on imported goods, Minister Kargbo announced that Odhav Multi Industries (SL) LTD, an iron rod manufacturing company in Songo, will be commissioned by the end of the year.
President Dr. Julius Maada Bio’s vision to boost the manufacturing sector will create opportunities for local businesses and encourage investment in domestic production. This initiative aims to increase self-sufficiency and improve the country’s trade balance.
