President Bio Appoints New National Youth Commissioner

President Dr. Julius Maada Bio has nominated Mr. Joseph Maada Lahai as the new Commissioner of the National Youth Commission, a move that underscores the government’s continued dedication to youth development and empowerment in Sierra Leone. The announcement was made on July 3, 2025, and is in accordance with Section 11(1) of the National Youth Commission Act, 2009.

Mr. Lahai’s appointment is a significant step, but it is subject to the approval of Parliament. A formal letter, signed by Barba B. Fortune, Secretary to the President, was issued on the same day, instructing Mr. Lahai to arrange his appearance before the Committee on Appointments and the Public Service with the Clerk of Parliament. This Parliamentary vetting process is a crucial stage, ensuring transparency and accountability in high-level public service roles.

Upon receiving Parliamentary endorsement, further details regarding the terms of Mr. Lahai’s office will be communicated. The widespread circulation of the appointment notice to key government offices, including the Vice President’s Secretary, the Leader of Government Business in Parliament, the Ministry of Finance, the Chief Minister’s office, the Ministry of Youth Affairs, the Clerk of Parliament, and the current Chair of the National Youth Commission, highlights the collaborative effort involved in this strategic leadership change. This nomination is widely seen as a reinforcement of President Bio’s ongoing commitment to fostering the potential of Sierra Leone’s youths through robust and strategic leadership within the National Youth Commission.
