Opposition Suspends Participation In Parliament

By Sierra Leone Monitor

On Tuesday 10th June 2025, the Opposition in Sierra Leone’s Parliament announced the immediate suspension of their participation in all parliamentary sittings and committee activities.

This move comes amid serious concerns over the continued role of the Clerk of Parliament, who is currently pursuing an executive position within his political party.

In a letter addressed to the Honourable Speaker, the Opposition highlighted that the Clerk’s active involvement in partisan politics compromises the expected neutrality and integrity of his office.

They argue that the Clerk’s position should remain strictly nonpartisan to maintain public confidence in the Parliament’s independence and credibility.

The Opposition is demanding the resignation or dismissal of the Clerk, stressing that his political ambitions conflict with the impartial and administrative duties required by his role. They emphasised that Parliament, as a national institution, must be free from political bias at all levels.

The Speaker has responded by promising a formal reply within one week. Meanwhile, the Opposition has decided to take a principled stand by withdrawing from parliamentary proceedings. They clarified that their action aims to protect democratic ethics, not to disrupt governance.

Honourable Abdul Kargbo, Leader of the Opposition, affirmed their commitment to the rule of law and institutional integrity.

He said the Opposition will return to Parliament to address the matter formally, once the Speaker’s response is received and determine the next steps to safeguard democratic accountability.
