MoICE & KAS Foster Civic Education Among Citizens

The Ministry of Information and Civic Education (MoICE), in partnership with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), the National Council for Civic Education and Democracy (NaCEED), and Fourah Bay College (FBC), hosted an Exclusive Civic Education Seminar on November 27–28, 2024. This transformative event brought together a diverse audience of youths, civil society organizations (CSOs), media practitioners, and government institutions to engage in meaningful discussions on key national issues.

Held at FBC, the seminar marked a significant milestone in the national effort to promote civic awareness, democratic values, and active citizenship in Sierra Leone. The program featured enlightening keynote addresses, thought-provoking presentations, and dynamic panel discussions, all centered on the theme of advancing civic education as a cornerstone of national development.

Keynote and Opening Remarks

Hon. Mohamed Orman Bangura, Minister of Youth Affairs, delivered an inspiring keynote address, emphasizing the pivotal role of young people in shaping Sierra Leone’s democratic future. His message resonated deeply with the audience, especially the youth participants, who are vital stakeholders in the nation’s governance.

Hon. Chernor Bah, Minister of Information and Civic Education, provided strategic insights on the direction of civic education in Sierra Leone. His speech underscored the government’s commitment to fostering an informed, engaged, and empowered citizenry through robust civic education initiatives.

Dr. Stefanie Brinkel, the Resident Representative of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Sierra Leone, reaffirmed KAS’s unwavering support for promoting democracy, the rule of law, and civic engagement in the country.

The conversation was rich with superb presentations on:

  1. The Direction of Civic Education in Sierra Leone:

Experts outlined the MoICE’s vision for civic education, emphasizing its role in building a more inclusive and democratic society.

Speakers delved into the principles underpinning a functioning democracy, highlighting the importance of accountability, transparency, and respect for legal frameworks.

A powerful session focused on the role of women in leadership and decision-making, with calls for greater inclusion and gender equity in politics and governance.

  1. Governance, Elections, and Civic Engagement:

Participants discussed the need for sustained citizen participation in electoral processes and governance, to ensure legitimacy and responsiveness in public institutions.

  1. Sustainable Development:

The seminar explored the intersection of civic education and sustainable development, emphasizing the need for informed citizens to drive progress in health, education, and environmental sustainability.

The event was more than just a seminar; it was a vibrant platform for dialogue, learning, and collaboration. Representatives from UNDP, Plan International, the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL), and Teach For Sierra Leone, contributed valuable perspectives, enriching the discussions. Special recognition was given to individuals like Aminata Kamanda, S. Kamara, and Hon. Mariama Konneh Zombo for their outstanding contributions to the event.

This groundbreaking seminar demonstrated the transformative power of civic education in fostering a mindset shift among citizens. By equipping Sierra Leoneans with the knowledge and tools to actively participate in governance, the nation takes a step closer to realizing its vision of an inclusive and democratic society.
