Freetown, March 27, 2025 –
In a decisive move to regulate cement prices and support economic stability, the Government of Sierra Leone has introduced a new pricing structure for cement, capping the wholesale price of a 50kg bag at NLe 150, effective March 28, 2025.
The decision was reached during a high-level meeting at State House, chaired by Chief Minister, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh. The session brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministries of Finance, Trade and Industry, Transport and Aviation, as well as officials from the National Revenue Authority, National Ports and Harbour Authority, and major cement importers and producers.
Key measures announced include:
– Periodic Pricing Reviews: The government and cement importers will regularly adjust pricing to reflect market conditions and ensure fairness.
– Wholesale Price Regulation: A standardized wholesale price of NLe 150 per 50kg bag will be enforced.
– Private Sector Support: Policies and incentives will be introduced to encourage private sector growth, aligning with national development objectives.
This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to protecting consumer interests while fostering a stable business environment. Officials say the move is part of broader efforts to balance economic growth with affordability, ensuring that Sierra Leoneans have access to essential building materials at fair prices.
