STATEMENT ON THE DETENTION OF THE NATIONAL SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE APC

Freetown, Sierra Leone – FRIDAY 13th February, 2026

I am deeply concerned about the detention of Lansana Dumbuya, the National Secretary General of the All Peoples Congress (APC), on Thursday, 12 February 2026, following a brief appearance at a Magistrate’s Court in Freetown. His bail denial and subsequent remand at Pademba Road Prison follow his earlier invitation and a day-long detention on 5 February 2026 by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Sierra Leone Police.

In my press statement at the time, I emphasised the importance of tolerance, restraint, and the protection of democratic freedoms and rights. It is therefore concerning that this development stems from the same alleged offence for which the party has already been fined by the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC), and for which the Secretary General now faces three-count charges and detention. This raises broader concerns about fairness and the preservation of the democratic space in our country.

Our nation’s history and the lessons from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Sierra Leone (TRCSL) remind us that peace and stability rely on tolerance, fairness, and strong democratic institutions. Sierra Leone’s democracy must continue to be a space where political rights are protected, and justice is administered fairly and consistently.

In this spirit, I advocate for the fair and lawful application of bail, in line with established legal principles and respect for the constitutional rights of all citizens. Simultaneously, I encourage all APC stakeholders to come together in support of our cherished party during this vital period. Regardless of any differences, the interest and survival of the APC must remain our utmost priority.

This moment calls for reflection, restraint, and a renewed commitment to the democratic values that unite us as a nation. Sierra Leone’s progress depends on our collective dedication to justice, peace, and reconciliation. Let us stay committed to healing our nation, uniting our people, and establishing institutions that earn public trust.
