APC flagbearer aspirant Dr. Ibrahim Bangura has expressed deep concern over the arrest and continued detention of Lansana Dumbuya Esq., the Secretary General of the All People’s Congress (APC), describing the action as a threat to democratic principles and political pluralism in Sierra Leone.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Dr. Bangura said he was “deeply troubled” by Mr. Dumbuya’s arrest following remarks made at a party meeting, and warned that such actions undermine the foundations of a healthy democracy.

“The strength of any democracy lies in its ability to tolerate dissent, protect political pluralism, and uphold the rule of law,” Dr. Bangura noted, stressing that the country is at a critical juncture with elections and constitutional reforms on the horizon.

He said he has already begun engaging party leadership and fellow APC flagbearer aspirants in an effort to secure Mr. Dumbuya’s immediate release.

“I condemn this action and I am actively engaging with party leadership and my colleagues to ensure that Lansana Dumbuya is released without delay,” he stated.

Dr. Bangura further emphasized that safeguarding democratic freedoms should not be viewed through a partisan lens.

“Safeguarding democratic freedoms is not a party issue; it is a national responsibility. I urge the relevant authorities to act with restraint, respect due process, and demonstrate a genuine commitment to the democratic values Sierra Leoneans have worked hard to build and preserve,” he said.

He called on the government and law enforcement agencies to uphold the rule of law and ensure that political actors are free to express their views without fear of intimidation or persecution.
