Musa Jabbie Kanu declared wanted
By Thaimu Thullah
As tense situation continues to escalate in Sierra Leone, the Sierra Leone Police has declared Musa Jabbie Kanu, a well-known supporter of the main Opposition All People’s Congress Party (APC), wanted for his alleged involvement in the August 10 skirmishes. The declaration comes as a shock to many, especially those who know Kanu as a peaceful and law-abiding citizen.
The August 10 protests have been described as the “bloodiest” since President Julius Maada Bio came into office in 2018. The protests were organized by Sierra Leoneans based in the Diaspora under the name of an organisation called PPP. The protest was organised to response to burning issues affecting the lives of Sierra Leoneans. Among the burning issues were rising cost of goods and services, unlawful arrests and detention of opposition supporters, injustice and many more. The demonstrations soon turned violent, resulting in the loss of lives and destruction of property.
Amidst the chaos, the Sierra Leone Police has identified Kanu as one of the key instigators of the protests. He has been accused of inciting the public, causing disorder, and participating in unlawful protests. According to reports, Kanu allegedly played a critical role in organizing and mobilizing people to join the protests, which ultimately resulted in violence and loss of lives. Kanu, who hails from #4 Consider Lane in Calaba Town, has been known to be a vocal supporter of the APC party. He has been actively involved in political campaigns and rallies for the party, but his involvement in the August 10 protests has put him in hot waters with the law.
The declaration of Kanu as a wanted person by the Sierra Leone Police is seen as a tactic to intimidate and silence the opposition party. Many are questioning the timing of the declaration, especially since the APC has been very vocal in criticizing the current government’s policies and decisions.
The tension between the ruling party and the opposition has been escalating since the controversial decision to remove the vice-president from office. The political climate in Sierra Leone is becoming increasingly polarized, and the recent events have only added fuel to the fire. The APC party has denied any involvement in the violent protests and has condemned the loss of lives. They have called for an independent investigation into the August 10 skirmishes and have urged the government to address the underlying issues that led to the protests. As the situation in Sierra Leone remains tense, the declaration of Kanu as wanted by the police has added to the already heightened emotions. It is yet to be seen how this will impact the political landscape of the country. However, one thing is clear, peace and unity are crucial for the development and progress of any nation. Hence, it is essential for all parties involved to find a peaceful resolution to the current crisis and work towards a better future for Sierra Leone.
