Freetown, Sierra Leone A shocking act of violence unfolded at The Axe of Zion Covenant Ministry as unidentified attackers, reportedly including individuals in military uniform, stormed the church premises, vandalizing property and injuring at least two members of the congregation. The assault, which occurred on a Sunday, is allegedly linked to a protracted land dispute that has been pending in court since September 11, 2024.
According to eyewitness accounts and church leadership, the violent raid led to extensive damage to the church building and left a church elder and a female congregant seriously wounded. The incident has deeply traumatized the church community, which now fears further attacks.
The church claims it holds valid legal documents authorizing its occupancy of the land, with documentation issued by Court No. 8. However, enforcement of the court’s directive has reportedly been inconsistent or deliberately ignored.
The church’s leader, who can be reached at +232 75599744, recounted:
“I showed the police and local authorities our legal documents, including court papers. Despite this, no meaningful intervention has come. Instead, our sanctuary was destroyed and our members attacked by those who think they are above the law.”
Eyewitnesses allege that the group responsible for the attack may be acting under the protection or influence of powerful individuals seeking to seize the church land unlawfully. Church officials say that initial attempts to misrepresent the matter as a marital property issue were clarified in court to reflect its true nature: an illegal land dispute.
Though a bench warrant was reportedly issued against some of the suspects, they remain free. The church says it has video and audio evidence of the attack, including graphic footage of the wounded victims one of whom suffered a head injury requiring stitches.
“We have followed every legal channel. But our pleas have gone unheard. We now call on national authorities, human rights defenders, and the media to stand with us. Justice must prevail,” said the church leadership.
They likened their faith and endurance to biblical figures like Esther, Mordecai, and Joseph, expressing hope that this moment of crisis could become a turning point for truth and justice.
“We believe God is with us in this trial. Like the heroes of scripture, we will stand firm.”
