After Almost 40 Years Of Perpetual Darkness…

Ambassador Almamy Bangura champions Kambia Electricity Project

Kambia district is one of the darkest districts in modern day Sierra Leone. From the reigns of Late Siaka Probin Stevens to the Late Dr. Joseph Saidu Momoh, from the Late President Joseph Saidu Momoh to Former Head of State Valentine Melvine Esegragbo Strasser, from former Head of State Valentine Esegragbo Strasser to Late President Dr. Akmad Tejan Kabbah and from Late President Akmed Tejan Kabbah to Former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, the northern border district of Kambia, with huge business and agricultural potential, has been in perpetual darkness for about 40 years.

Kambia district is a border district to neighboring Guinea and has a population of 367,699, according to the 2021 population and housing census. Approximately, 99.9% of the inhabitants of the district still continue to go without portable drinking water, while the entire population has gone without electricity, quality healthcare services, education, among others, for over 4 decades. Kambia district has been one of the least considered in terms of basic social amenities.

In the area of road connectivity, the district benefited from a 6km township tarmark road construction and many feeder roads that graciously connected the central chiefdom headquarter town to the subborbs under the reign of former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma. This was a great development consideration for the farming population of the district.

A few years preceding the 2018 general elections that saw President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, as fountain of honor and President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Kambia is among the few districts in the country that have enjoyed a Presidential favor and entitlement of a thermal power plant that is also expected to be backed up with a mini-grid solar power electricity to ensure permanent electricity for the people of the district.

The great sign of leadership bliss came following persistent advocacy for and on behalf of the people of Kambia by a revered son of Kambia, a true loyalist and former Sierra Leone Ambassador to the Republic of Guinea, who also doubles as the Chairperson of the governing Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Ambassador Alimamy Hassan Bangura.

His leadership bliss, backed by his exemplary lobbying power with the powers that be, many believe will certainly restore the lost hopes of the northern district of Kambia. The district, under the political leadership of Ambassador Bangura, is expected to enjoy a sustainable and affordable power supply soon, after about 40 years of blackout.
