Sierra Leone Association of Bloggers (SAB) Officially Launched at New Brookfields Hotel

On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, Sierra Leone marked a significant milestone in its digital landscape with the official launch of the Sierra Leone Association of Bloggers (SAB) at the New Brookfields Hotel, Jomo Kenyatta Road. The event, attended by government officials, stakeholders, and members of the blogging community, underscored the importance of digital platforms in shaping narratives and fostering meaningful societal change.

The First Lady of Sierra Leone, Her Excellency Fatima Bio, highlighted the transformative power of social media in combating pressing societal issues such as gender-based violence (GBV). She described social media as a vital tool for communication, awareness, and mobilization, urging the government, non-governmental organizations, and stakeholders to support the initiative. The First Lady emphasized the importance of empowering young bloggers to use their platforms responsibly and within legal frameworks that protect individuals and communities from cyber threats.

Ben Kaifala, Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission, commended the bloggers for their role in driving 21st-century discourse. He emphasized the significance of storytelling in shaping perceptions about Sierra Leone globally, and encouraged the blogging community to craft narratives that reflect the country’s beauty and potential. Kaifala pledged the commission’s full support to SAB and appealed for a commitment to positive storytelling that would attract respect and investment.

A representative of the European Union (EU) acknowledged blogging as a powerful medium for shaping narratives, amplifying marginalized voices, and fostering dialogue on national and global issues. The representative highlighted the EU’s commitment to an open and inclusive digital landscape and pledged support for SAB in promoting ethical journalism and digital literacy. They emphasized that with great influence comes the responsibility to ensure fair, accurate, and constructive content, while congratulating SAB on this historic achievement.

Renowned rapper and Entertainment Ambassador, Kao Denero, also addressed the gathering, describing the launch as a historic and timely development. He called for responsible creativity within the blogging and entertainment industries, emphasizing the need for regulations and ethical standards to ensure accountability and professionalism. He expressed his support for SAB and commended the efforts of the organizers in uniting the blogging community. Kao Denero acknowledged the complex relationship between public figures and bloggers, but recognized the importance of checks and balances in fostering transparency and growth.
