The Ministry of Energy has reported a significant variance in its FY2026 expenditure, with actual spending reaching NLe946.0 million against an approved budget of NLe489.24 million, resulting in a negative variance of NLe456.76 million.

According to the Ministry, the variance was largely attributed to expenditure associated with power-sector subsidies.

Despite the expenditure gap, the Ministry highlighted several achievements during the year, including progress on the Southern Corridor, the 33kV Peninsular Distribution Project, renewable energy initiatives, and the implementation of the Regional Emergency Solar Power Intervention Project (RESPITE) at Newton and Lungi.

The Ministry also reported progress in the electrification of seven towns as part of efforts to expand access to reliable electricity across the country.

For FY2027, the Ministry has outlined major investments aimed at strengthening electricity generation, transmission, distribution and access. Key proposed investments include US$80.21 million for RESPITE, US$74.04 million for the Electricity Sector Loss Reduction and Access Project (ESLEAP), and US$53 million for the rehabilitation of transmission and distribution infrastructure in Bo and Kenema.

Other major projects include the US$79 million Bumbuna–Waterloo/Newton Northern Corridor project, alongside additional energy-access initiatives.

Meanwhile, the Ministry’s recurrent budget is projected at NLe27.85 million for 2027, increasing to NLe29.10 million in 2028 and NLe30.99 million in 2029.

The proposed investments form part of the Ministry’s broader efforts to improve electricity reliability, expand national access and strengthen the country’s energy infrastructure.
