Leading flag-bearer aspirant for the Sierra Leone People’s Party, Hon. Alhaji Musa Tarawally, has said that if elected as the presidential candidate for the party ahead of the 2028 polls, ‘No Regime Change Strategy will work against the ruling SLPP.’ Hon. Musa Tarawally made this statement on the night of Friday, 7th August 2026, at the SLPP Party Office in Kailahun town, while addressing constituency chairmen, youth leaders, and women’s leaders of the party who gathered in their numbers to show their support, loyalty, and commitment to him as the preferred choice and presidential aspirant they strongly believe will lead the SLPP to victory in 2028.
Addressing the packed hall, Hon. Tarawally extended thanks and appreciation to God Almighty for giving him the courage and zest to save the SLPP from the political doldrums. He encouraged the constituency chairmen, youth leaders, and women’s wing to continue believing in his leadership, maintaining that if given the opportunity to be elected as the party’s flag-bearer, he would certainly become the next president, as he has the international connections that will dismantle the regime change strategy under which the APC is hiding. He said regime change has never worked in South Africa, where the ANC is in charge. Hon. Tarawally also referenced Kenya and Nigeria, stating that those nations have successfully changed the regime change narratives, and he has the potential, strength, and connections to do likewise if he becomes the presidential candidate for the SLPP. Hon. Tarawally added that the SLPP must ensure the mistakes made in Makeni that paved the way for the APC to take office in 2007 are not repeated.
He said, if given the opportunity and mandate by the delegates to become the flag-bearer and presidential candidate, ‘irrespective of what happens, the SLPP will stay in power democratically and the party will be strengthened.’ Hon. Musa Tarawally recounted how it was the SLPP that enabled both ex-President Kabbah and the current President Bio to win. Therefore, he said, the same SLPP that made them presidents has what it takes to make him the next president after President Bio. He pledged his support to ensure that constituency chairmen, alongside youth leaders and the women’s wing, enjoy rights and benefits under his leadership.
He pointed out that by the look of things, he noticed the constituency chairmen were stressed and unhappy, but he would ensure their stress is replaced with smiles under his leadership. He stated that the SLPP is one of the oldest political parties in sub-Saharan Africa, for which the members should always be recognized. Therefore, he stated that abandoning members is not the right approach, expressing, ‘If we abandon the members, we might not be doing the party a favor but creating more problems. That is why we have focused on the empowerment of the constituencies.’ As a seasoned political figure within the SLPP, he noted, ‘I have gone through the ranks, serving in different capacities. If I become leader of the SLPP, no MP will go to Parliament without the decision of the constituencies.’
