The Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) on Wednesday, 1 July 2026, conducted a competency assessment for female drivers who recently completed a driver training programme organized by the Ministry of Transport and Aviation.
The assessment evaluated the participants’ practical driving skills, knowledge of road traffic laws, and overall competence to ensure they meet the standards required for safe and responsible driving before obtaining their driver’s licences.


The exercise was witnessed by the Deputy Executive Director, Mr. Josie Abraham Scott-Manga; the Director of Transport, Mr. Arthur Brima; the Director of Safety and Enforcement, Mr. Augustine Kaitongi; and a representative of the Ministry of Transport and Aviation, Mr. Mahmoud Kamara, demonstrating the strong partnership between the Ministry and SLRSA in promoting road safety and professional driver training.
Addressing the participants, Deputy Executive Director, Mr. Scott-Manga, commended the trainees for their dedication and perseverance. He emphasized that road safety begins with competent and disciplined drivers, urging them to uphold professionalism, obey traffic laws, and serve as role models for safe driving. He further noted that increasing women’s participation in the transport sector promotes gender inclusion while fostering a more responsible road safety culture.
Director of Transport Mr. Arthur Brima, thanked the Ministry for ensuring that all trainees undergo SLRSA’s mandatory assessment before obtaining driver’s licences. He noted that the exercise aligns with the Authority’s mandate to regulate driver certification, strengthen road safety standards, and enhance driver competence.
Director of Safety and Enforcement, Mr. Augustine Kaitongi, praised the Ministry for the initiative and encouraged the drivers to maintain professionalism, comply with traffic regulations, and serve as ambassadors for road safety. He reminded them that SLRSA’s enforcement officers are committed to safeguarding public safety through effective monitoring and enforcement.
Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Transport and Aviation, Mr. Mahmoud Kamara described the assessment as a vital step towards producing qualified and competent female drivers. He commended SLRSA for maintaining high standards in driver assessment and certification, noting that only competent drivers should be entrusted with the responsibility of using the nation’s roads.
SLRSA remains committed to working closely with the Ministry of Transport and Aviation and other stakeholders to strengthen driver competency, improve compliance with road safety regulations, and reduce road traffic crashes through effective training, assessment, certification, and continuous monitoring.
The assessment reflects the shared commitment of SLRSA and the Ministry to ensuring that every licensed driver possesses the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to contribute to a safer and more efficient transport system in Sierra Leone.
