Forced Initiation Row Osman Kanu Still Missing

By Musa Sesay

More than years after a dramatic escape from an alleged forced initiation into the Poro Secret Society, the whereabouts of Osman Kanu and his immediate family remain unknown, leaving residents of Yoni Chiefdom and human rights advocates deeply concerned about a case that has lingered unresolved since late 2020.
The incident reportedly began in 2020 in a village in Yoni Chiefdom, when Osman Kanu, a young father, was allegedly seized by members of the traditional society and taken to a secluded forest shrine for initiation rituals. According to several villagers familiar with the matter, Kanu had previously resisted pressure from society elders who demanded that he succeed his father, Pa Kanu, a senior member of the society whose declining health had prevented him from actively participating in society obligations.
Under local customary expectations, sources say the eldest son is often expected to assume certain responsibilities within the society when a father becomes incapacitated or dies. Osman Kanu, however, reportedly rejected repeated attempts to compel him to undergo initiation, a refusal that heightened tensions between him and influential members of the society.
Witnesses say the situation escalated one evening when a group of men arrived at Kanu’s residence under the pretext of requesting a chicken for a traditional sacrifice intended to pray for his father’s recovery. As Kanu stepped outside to assist them, he was allegedly overpowered and taken to a shrine deep within the surrounding forest where preparations for initiation rituals were reportedly underway.
Family members claim they later heard cries for help from the direction of the shrine but were too frightened to intervene. Villagers say rituals had already begun and that the area was guarded by armed young men believed to be enforcing the society’s authority.
According to accounts gathered during local inquiries, Kanu managed to escape during the night with the assistance of an elderly villager believed to be sympathetic to his plight. He reportedly fled through the bush under cover of darkness, pursued by a group of young men armed with machetes and sticks.
One resident recalled seeing a man believed to be Kanu running toward an unfinished structure in the village while being chased. The witness said he quietly signaled to the fleeing man after the pursuers had passed in the wrong direction, giving him an opportunity to slip away. Kanu was reportedly injured during the escape, sustaining a wound to his left hand.
By the following morning, Kanu had vanished. His wife and children also disappeared that same night, prompting speculation that they had reunited and fled together to an unknown location.
Villagers say society members later returned to the family compound demanding Kanu’s whereabouts. When they failed to find him, threats were allegedly issued warning that anyone sheltering him or his family would face severe punishment.
The tension surrounding the case drew attention from civil rights advocate John Koroma, who at the time warned that some traditional societies were increasingly operating without effective oversight.
He argued that forced initiations and intimidation were contributing to fear within rural communities and sometimes pushing young people to abandon their homes.
More than five years later, the mystery remains unresolved. Local sources say neither Osman Kanu nor his family has been seen in the area since the night of the escape.
Despite the passage of time, residents say the incident is still remembered with unease, and the question of what truly happened to Osman Kanu continues to hang over the community without answers.
