Press Release
Ref: Public Awareness of Political Persecution by the SLPP Government
We wish to inform the public about the ongoing persecution faced by Mr. Abass Kamara, an outspoken advocate for justice, good governance, peace, and unity.
His activism has been a significant challenge to the SLPP government, which perceives his efforts as a threat to itsauthority.
Mr. Kamara has been actively preaching against bad governance and mobilising youth to stand up for transparency and accountability. His dedication to promoting justice through music and community engagement has earned him both admiration and hostility from the government.
In retaliation, Mr. Kamara was arrested and subjected to brutal treatment, during which his hand was broken. Despite this, he continued his activism, believing in the importance of fighting for the rights of his people.
He was later targeted again, detained and taken to the police station without just cause, but was eventually released with the help of fellow youth.
However, the threats against Mr. Kamara persisted. He has been labelled a wanted individual, hunted by security forces, and targeted for assassination.
Moreover, there are credible reports that Mr. Kamara faces a death threat if he is spotted anywhere, underscoring the grave danger to his life. His activism, which emphasises peace, unity, and justice, has made him a marked man.
The release serves to highlight the risks faced by outspoken critics of the government and to warn others who may consider speaking out. The government’s actions against Mr. Kamara are a clear attempt to silence dissent and suppress the voices of those advocating for justice and accountability.
We urge the authorities to cease their harassment and respect the fundamental rights of all citizens to free expression and peaceful activism. The continued persecution of individuals like Mr. Kamara undermines the principles of democracy and human rights that we all strive to uphold.
We also call on the international community and human rights organisations to take urgent note of these developments and to stand in solidarity with those fighting for justice and freedom in our country.
