At Presidential Town Hall…

Attorney General Updates Kenema on Justice Reforms

Kenema City Hall, Kenema —

On Tuesday, 17th June 2025, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay Esq., engaged residents of Kenema District in a candid and informative session on justice sector reforms and national development, as part of the ongoing Presidential Town Hall Series under the theme “Bringing Governance Closer: Dialogue and Delivery.”

Addressing a packed hall, Mr. Sesay provided key updates on the Criminal Procedures Act 2024, which is scheduled to come into effect in September 2025. He noted that the revised legislation marks a major milestone in streamlining Sierra Leone’s criminal justice system, particularly by reducing custodial sentences for minor and non-violent offenses. The reform aims to shift focus toward rehabilitation and alternative sentencing, thereby fostering a more equitable and efficient justice framework.

The Attorney General also briefed the audience on the ongoing constitutional review process, underscoring the government’s commitment to inclusive governance and the rule of law. He called on citizens to engage actively in the national dialogue, stressing that public input is critical to shaping a constitution that reflects the people’s will and aspirations.

Responding to concerns raised during the Q&A session about prison overcrowding and post-incarceration support, Mr. Sesay acknowledged the challenges, but assured residents that the Ministry is implementing a comprehensive strategy to address them.

The Attorney General outlined key interventions to address prison overcrowding, including revised sentencing guidelines under the new Criminal Procedures Act and the expansion of alternative dispute resolution and non-custodial sentencing options. He also highlighted a partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture through the Feed Salone initiative, which engages inmates in agricultural programs to build skills, generate income, and enhance food security.

“These programs are not just about reducing overcrowding. They are about restoring dignity, offering second chances, and equipping inmates with the tools to reintegrate into society. That’s how we break the cycle of reoffending and build safer communities” Mr. Sesay emphasized.

The event concluded with expressions of gratitude from community members, who lauded the transparent engagement and urged the Ministry to accelerate reform implementation.

The Presidential Town Hall Series continues to play a pivotal role in strengthening public trust, encouraging civic participation, and delivering on the government’s commitment to bringing governance closer to the people through dialogue and action.
