As Negotiations Breaks Down With Karpowership…

Govt Seeks Alternate Solution In Senegal

High-level negotiations to reach an amicable settlement with the management of Karpowership broke down last week, after the Ministry of Energy failed to convince Karpowership to extend their contract for a period not exceeding one year. The current contract expired on 12th June, 2025.

Meanwhile, the Government of Sierra Leone owes Karpowership US$67Million. Payment plans agreed between both parties involving high-ranking representatives were not sustained.

Karpowership has agreed to maintain 6MW supply of electricity for essential services and critical facilities like hospitals, purely on humanitarian grounds.

The Government of Sierra Leone has made an informal contact with the Senegalese Government to intervene. Talks are ongoing.

The reduction of capacity supply from Karpowership is likely to plunge the capital city into blackout. The Ministry of Energy said in a press release that they would embark on load shedding during this period of uncertainty.

Investigations continue.
