Karpowership Gives Notice Of Disconnection To Govt
FREETOWN, Sierra Leone —
Freetown residents are bracing for significant electricity disruptions after Karpowership announced plans to suspend power supply to the city at midnight on June 12, 2025.
The Ministry of Energy confirmed the development in a statement released today, citing unpaid bills as the reason behind the Turkish power supplier’s decision.
According to the statement, despite ongoing talks aimed at extending the current contract, Karpowership formally notified the government of its intention to disconnect power on May 28. Although the company has committed to maintaining a minimal 6MW supply to keep hospitals and essential services operational, widespread load shedding is expected to affect most households and businesses.
The Ministry of Energy stressed that emergency measures have been activated under the directive of President Julius Maada Bio to alleviate the impact on the capital.
It also noted that ongoing reforms at the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) are designed to enhance both the financial viability and technical capacity of the utility provider.
While acknowledging the inconvenience residents will face, the Ministry thanked the public for its patience and cooperation during this challenging period.
